That is the time I spent one week in New York City. Boarding the train at 8:27am and arriving at 11:10am. This is a webpage documenting my trip. This webpage will also provide reasoning why seeing art in person is an overall greater experience than seeing it in the classroom.
During the trip, we visited different museums each day. During my visit to the museums, I got to see artists' work I recognized, along with work of new artists.
Along with the work, there was also opportunity to learn about the cultures of the art.
New York City is more fast paced than Lancaster. If you're a newbie to the city or a tourist, sometimes it can be hard to keep up.
Upon arriving in NYC, our first stop was The Museum of Modern Art.
Below are some exhibits and artists I saw at The Museum of Modern Art.
This exhibit explores 111 items of clothing and accessories in the 20th and 21st century. These items hold currency to this day and have had a strong impact on the world.
A unfamiliar artist I saw at the Museum of Modern Art. I was able to view her works and what her style looks like, along with stories behind her pieces.
I could point out Monet's work the second I walked into the room. I was not disappointed.
I got to view the beautiful Starry Night, along with other pieces by Van Gogh.
Day 2 began began at the Cooper Hewitt Museum. After that, we went to the Society of Illustrators.
Here are some pictures I took while at The Cooper Hewitt Museum and while at Society of Illustrators.
To begin our day, we started by visiting the September 11th Memorial. Then we went into the National September 11th Museum. Later on, we grabbed lunch at Eataly and went to The Morgan Library and Museum.
The museum is very emotional. It is dripping with details from the attack. They included every single thing they possibly could to tell the full story of the tragic day.
The Morgan Library and Museum was different. A classmate and I explored the library first. It was designed exactly like JP Morgan's House, and there were books everywhere. The ceilings were very tall.
Unfortunately, on our way back to the hotel, I managed to slip and fall in the biggest puddle in New York City. My pants were completely soaked, and for a minute I sat in the puddle contemplating what just happened. Before I could get up, I was whipped to my feet by a complete stranger, and another stranger gave me her tissues to clean up. Want to know how to put a certain part of New York City on pause for a second? Just slip in a massive puddle.
Today, we visited the Whitney Museum of American Art. I was one of the guides to getting the group to the museum on time. When we got there, we attended a tour at 11:00AM until 11:45AM. After the tour concluded, we were allowed to explore the museum on our own.
Here are some pictures I took while at The Whitney Museum of Art.
Today is the last day in New York City before we head back to Lancaster. To begin our day, we visited the Aperture Foundation. This museum is more focused on Photography.
We left for the train back to Lancaster at 3:30PM. We boarded at 4:47PM and arrived back in Lancaster, PA around 8:00PM.
Art in the classroom isn't entirely bad. It can actually familiarize you with the art you will see in person. But, seeing art in person is more fulfilling. You can see the detail of the work up close and personal, instead of just seeing it on a computer screen where details might be hidden. Seeing art in person is more emotional as well. You're seeing the artwork in the flesh.
